Novenber 18, 2003

LAS VEGAS, Nov 17, 2003 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Microsoft Corp. on Monday unveiled its 2004 version of Windows XP operating system for tablet personal computers here at the Comdex trade show.

The new version features deep integration of pen support in Windows XP, making it easier to create text anywhere in Windows and familiar Windows applications, according to Microsoft.

"The new operating system now offers software developers a rich set of capabilities to deliver innovative software applications based on the Tablet PC platform," Microsoft said in a statement.

The new OS, if integrated in Microsoft Office 2003 and Office OneNote 2003, will offer enhanced productivity by allowing users to annotate anywhere in Microsoft Office Word, Excel or PowerPoint 2003, and send handwritten e-mail in Office Outlook 2003, Microsoft said.

Tablet PCs, introduced a year ago by several major PC makers, is viewed by some analysts as a next-generation notebook PC.

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, in a keynote speech at the opening of the Comdex 2003 last night, said Tablet PCs are experiencing increasing support from all segments of the PC industry.

"Forty companies are designing and manufacturing Tablet PCs worldwide, and more than 120 are developing software that takes advantage of the pen capabilities in Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, " Gates said.

He said Microsoft is seeing great early purchases and deployments of Tablet PCs in several major vertical markets, including healthcare, financial services and education.

Microsoft is scheduled to release its Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2004 in mid-2004 as a free upgrade for existing customers and will come preinstalled on new Tablet PC hardware systems.
